My name is Jen and I’m a graphic designer.
On February 23rd, I registered a business name, Pollinator Studio. My very own business! After 10 years in the industry, I’m officially my own boss, full-time. Sort of. I’m just getting started, so right now it’s just a name and a domain. And a pretty solid business plan, if I do say so myself.
I’m excited, and a little nervous. It looks good on paper, but what about real life?
I know there are a lot of kick-ass business ladies out there, and I want to meet them. I want to make connections. I want some inspiration! And I want advice.
The best advice I’ve received thus far was from one of my university teachers. She said,
“Let somebody else pay for your mistakes.”
She explained that working for yourself is great, but you don’t learn everything in school. Work for somebody else, learn how the business works, make mistakes on their dime. It was great advice. But now I’m on my own, and the mistakes are all mine.
I want to go to FITC Toronto 2015 so that I can learn from others – their triumphs, and their mistakes.
My advice?
If you find a great opportunity, take it.
